295 – let’s get dangerous poyo

Filed under: Updates — CanonRap @ 5:05 pm

Okay, this is unexpected. Pyo.

“No way…

Zazie…

Zazie Rainyday…?”

Picking up from 294 – Mana adopts the “shoot first, shoot later” attitude, which is understandable given the derailing of the logic train started by Zazie’s appearance.

Of course, Zazie can stop bullets with her mind (apparently). Mana, Kaede and Setsuna close in and hold her at gun/sword/shuriken-point.

And again, Zazie shows some strange telekinesis that blows away Setsuna and Kaede while holding Mana in the air.

Well, “Zazie speaking” can be crossed off the List of 10 Things That Need to Happen Before Negima Ends:

“Don’t move -pyo.

I have no intention of hurting any of you -pyo.

…I came here to stop you.

…poyo.

You are making a mistake -pyo. Right now, you are a dangerous existence -poyo.”

Sounds familiar…

(Uh, the “dangerous existence” part, not the -poyo.)

Begin the rain of lampshades:

“Wh, wha?! Zazie-san?!”

“Hold it… Zazie-san, as in, our Zazie?”

“The one in the Circus Club? The strange and cool and quietest member of the class who occasionally looks a bit mischievous…?”

“Well, this is completely unexpected…”

“Wait, how is this possible?! Plot development-wise! And what’s with her sentence endings? You’re supposed to have foreshadowing in a story, you know – I mean, okay, Zazie is on the head of the ‘Weirdos of 3-A’ list…”

Serious (?) again:

“The path you walk will lead to even more bloodshed than Fate’s… poiyo.

…I think you already understand what I’m saying -pyo.

I will give you your final choice -pyo.”

And whoosh – they’re back at Mahora, ship and all. According to Chachamaru, there’s been no Haruna considers forced teleportation, illusions, or a phantasmagoria, but Chachamaru just detects a huge amount of magic power… and it all looks real, at least.

[EDIT: My bad, misread it as Chachamaru’s line somehow… which makes no sense.]

“With this, over half of your problems have been solved, yes?”

“Heh, so you say.

And what happened to the ‘-poyo’, huh?”

“…have been solved -zazie.”

“Now it’s ‘-zazie’?!”

“…have been solved -ponyo.”

Mana breaks out of Zazie’s Force Crush with her rakansen:

“Don’t be fooled, sensei! There’s no way that can be Zazie!

It’s impossible to move between the worlds right now! This has to be a trap!”

Setsuna gets back up:

“With all the Gates destroyed, the two worlds should be completely cut off! It makes no sense for Zazie-san to be here!

And this situation we’re in now… Be careful, sensei!”

Nodoka starts drawing her Pactio Card…

Meanwhile, Fate’s girls are looking for the missing intruders, and Shirabe pulls up a recording of Zazie confronting Ala Alba. Koyomi thinks that she is a secret ally of Fate:

“I don’t know that person.”

Koyomi asks Dunamis:

“I do not know. Do not contact me for something so trivial, little cat.

Back to Fate:

“…I don’t like her.”

“Do not be concerned with her. I called her here… we are old acquaintances.”

“So it was you…”

Yes, the one member of Fate’s team which hasn’t appeared since the Gateport attack is, er, still here. And he/she/it ‘go way back’ with Zazie…?

(Well, I’ll point out that he/she/it speaks nothing like the 2 biggest contenders – ie. Chao or Zecht – but that’s hardly an obstacle.)

“I will ask one more time -poyo. The path you walk will lead to even more bloodshed than Fate’s.

Even so, will you still walk it… poyo?

The path you walk will surely lead to the future that ‘Chao Lingshen’ had tried to prevent -poyo.”

Everyone’s shocked, except Negi:

“I…

I know that.

That it would probably end that way.

Even so… I intend to continue.

Following the steps of my father.”

Zazie pulls out her Pactio Card (!)…

“…Is that so -poyo?

Then it can’t be helped -pyo.

Artifact – Magic Lantern Circus.”

Gentou no Circus
幻灯のサーカス

And that’s the end of another chapter, the second in a part of the story I’m starting to think of as “the Zazie Twist”.

Very much looking forward to the next chapter -zazie.

  1. Zazie had a couple of speech bubbles early in volume 9 when she invited Negi to her event at the Mahora Festival. Other than telling her “critters” they couldn’t eat Sayo, I don’t think she’s spoken much else.

I loved how Akamatsu-sensei channeled fan reaction via Chisame. ^_^

I’ll have to ponder the chapter some more before I remark on Zazie.

  2. Zazie in a serious speaking role, then. ^^;;

But I think this is still way too left-field to draw any conclusions from.

  3. You are mistaken, Chibi-mage has appeared after the gateport incident.

And it would seem Dunamis/Dynamis isn’t much of a conversation partner.

  4. So based on the wikipedia link you gave, Zazie’s artifact “Magic Lantern Circus” might be some sort of projector. That means that the present situation of Mahora might be an illusion but from the reaction of Fate’s girls who are presently searching for AA in the palace, it seems that the group isn’t in the MW dimension right now.
So basically, it might be possible that Zazie had used a dimension changing spell (similar to “Encompandentia Infinita” artifact of Tamaki), this could explain the large amount of magical energy being used which Chachamaru detected.

Also, is Zazie’s artifact named is only given in japanese or does it have a latin name also.

  5. @SL: Zazie’s Artifact was in Japanese only. Fix in volume release, maybe?

@Rhonin: Ah, so he (or whatever) did. In any case, I hope we know who he is soon.

(I liked how Dunamis called Koyomi a cat ^^;;)

  6. Also on a side note i wanted to ask you what things you could understand on Zazie’s card. Here are the things that i was able to make out on her card (need your help on confirmation of these),

    Colour – “Rubor”

Virtue – “Audacia” or “Justitia” since the word is small in size & ends with “ia” (the other word that ends with “ia” which i know is to long in size)

    Direction – “Septentrio”

Astral Sign – “Pluto” (but shouldn’t it be written as “Pluton” in there)

    …..XD I love Negima

  8. There’s a minor character in Keroro Gunsou, Space Police Officer Poyon, who tends to end her sentences with “poyo”.

I think that Zazie is sending a shout out to that show.

  9. In Rave, Ruby also ended his sentences with “poyo”. It could be a reference to that.
Chisame’s lines as the voice of the fans was hilarious.

  10. In her inner monologue, am I reading right that Mana is marvelling on “Zazie’s” strength and magical power, but muses that “robotic time travelers and vampires” are not especially mysterious? LOL… And people wonder why Mana still gets so much in-universe respect when she’s “just a normal human” and doesn’t really do anything flashy, like Secchan, Negi, or even Kaede…

I’m declaring it official. Mana is the Negiverse Batman… With guns…

@Raso: As long as Zazie doesn’t come slowly spinning out of a portal, saying “yoisho, yoisho…”, I don’t think there are going to be any copyright issues. But that was the first character I thought of… ^_^

  11. @quigonkenny The Q&A says that Mana is not 100% normal she has a demon eye. It would be funny if Zazie changes verbal tics every chapter.

    Comment by Raso — July 8, 2010 @ 6:20 am

  12. @quigon: Read Mana’s monologue as one sentence. She never thought Zazie was normal, but Zazie wasn’t especially strange in a class like theirs.

And I’d agree that yeah, in this universe and compared to the others, Mana might as well be Badass Normal. Has she ever done something supernatural under her own power except for the qi coin-shots and demon eye? Well, and that weird hammerspace storage, however that works.

    Comment by CanonRap — July 8, 2010 @ 12:26 pm

  13. @CanonRap: yeah, I saw cnet’s translation, and I’ve still got the red mark on my forehead from where I slapped it… ^_^’

As for the Demon Eye, how do we know that’s not just some training/ki-based ability like Ku’s martial arts? She looks like she’s at most 7 or 8 in her pactio picture, so who knows how long she’s been a merc… As for the hammerspace, I’m guessing it’s similar to the other magical items she uses (teleport charms, magic bullets, etc.), and is just empty space built into her clothes. A “Dress of Holding”, if you will…

To keep the DnD theme going, she’s a (very) high-level rogue with massive Dex and more magical items than you can shake a Staff of the Archmage at…
