288 – European Gigolo

Filed under: Updates — CanonRap @ 2:18 pm

Inner demons and Akira action, all in one chapter.

Following on the previous chapter, the classmates in Wales are going back to Mahora, as per Eva’s instructions. Nekane asks Ayaka and the rest of the class to look after Negi and not let him go astray… Ayaka, naturally, promises to “raise him into a fine gentleman”.

Just before they part, Ayaka asks Nekane if Negi’s father was interested in astronomy, particularly in Mars.

Negi and Eva stand (naked, as in most phantasmagoria encounters) in front of demon!Negi:

“T-This… This is me?”
“Yes, that’s it. This is your true nature. The source of your power. You’ve become strong. But this is just a primal demon.”
“If this is my true form… then how can someone like me be together with everyone…?”
“What is it? I thought you’ve already grasped the ultimate meaning of Magia Erebea, boy… heheh….

…that Magia Erebea, is the power to devour all.

Negi wakes up and finds Ako sleeping on the side of his bed, still with the age pill. He goes outside and runs into Akira, who has a thing or four to say to him…

“Ako looks fine, but she… she’s still in love with Nagi-san. Do you know what I’m saying? U-Um, about that. I have a favour to ask. Please kis- Pactio with Ako.”

Negi’s reactions in this chapter are priceless.

Akira Impact Replay:

“‘Nagi’ and Ako never had a proper farewell… at the end, I want you to give this a nice and proper ending.”

“Y-Yes, I understand. You’re right, this should be handled properly…”

“Did… did you know that Makie likes you?”

“Um, yes…. I really like Makie-san too.”

Not in that way!

She likes you… in the same way Miyazaki and Ako likes you…”

“Actually, there’s one other thing… about Yuuna…”

There’s more?!

tl;dr – Akira tells Negi to just Pactio everyone. Untimely enough, Chisame finds them and starts eavesdropping.

“Ako-san… Makie-san… A lot of people like me, don’t they…”

“Yes, they do, Negi-sensei.”

“Am I really… qualified for that?

I was about to hurt Ako-san and the others! I wanted to protect them, but I myself exposed them to danger!

That appearance, it was the true form of my own heart. I’m not qualified to accept these feelings…”

You idiot… even if that’s the case, you still stopped, didn’t you? You’re okay. Everyone knows that. If you don’t accept yourself, then you’re being rude to all those who have these feelings for you, y’know?

…You’re being rude to me too, you know.”

(I lol’d.)

Hilarity ensues:

“Oh, what about Akira-san’s Pactio?”

“Well, in the first place, it was planned for all of you. If I’m doing it with 3 of you then of course, Akira-san…”

(Chisame: Natural Gigolo Talk?! Again?!)

Unfortunately, Yuuna and Makie interrupt before the situation gets any more Love Hina… but they mistake it anyway for Akira trying to, er, jump the gun, in a manner of speaking.

“Heh… looks like something just has to be done with that brat…”

“Chiu-sama is scary…”

It’s nice to see chapters like these keep going after the Killing Field that was the first half of Vol31. Though I wonder how long Akamatsu wants to draw this break out… there’s still a maybe-last-battle with Fate and co. on the horizon in a few hours/days.

(Aside: I’d like to give a big “thanks but lulwut” to the person who put a link to Vetus on the French Wikipedia’s Negima page.)

  1. Thanks for the spoilers, been eagerly waiting for them!

  2. “Am I really… qualified for that?”

This can be taken in so many delightful ways, once he’s keyed in that he has a harem at 10 years old.

  3. I think Akamatsu-sensei may keep things lighter for a bit longer, at least until the Magia Erebea element is resolved and a few more pactiones are formed with Negi. ^_^ I figure most of this current volume will be light and return to the “stuff” at volume’s end to form the basis of a cliff hanger to the next volume. We’ll see though.

  4. You’re probably right, judging by Akamatsu’s usual habits for arranging chapters…

I think Magia Erebea will be retained in some form after this. Eva did say that he needs to get a hold of himself, and like it or not, the demon is a part of him. Maybe he can turn it into some kind of “light-sided” ME?

  5. Oh Akira, I never knew…Say, when Chisame said “Heh… looks like something just has to be done with that brat…”, did she refer to the “kill him and spare the ladies the pain” thing back then?

On a serious note, did Ayaka ask the astronomy thing out of pure curiosity, or has she started to feel suspicious about all this?

  6. Negi-Akira serious talk(lol..unexpected),
    Chisame jealous again,
Ayaka seems to going to know the truth preety soon,
the demon Negi becomes is a primal form? so a better/powerfull/true form of Negi yet to be shown(awesome).

this apart why isnt the english translations of 288 out yet?

  7. Awww man, this chapter really makes me remember why I like Love Hina’s Motoko: those lovely long black hairs! Of course, unlike Keitaro, Negi has his natural gigolo charm, one so strong that in the last page Akira seems so ready to yield :). If not for Ako, his age, and the last second intervention, she’d probably *ehm* pactioed a long time ago. Wonder if she’ll go Nodoka and starts to unconsciously think of the harem route *oh yeah*

And yeah, Chisame’s jealousy is so obvious that people on earth could probably see it if they look up to Mars…

  8. so true of both Akira and Chisame.
Chisame jealousy is the most awesome

  9. A language question about Chisame’s line at the end…

The original Japanese is “やはり あのガキどーにかしとかんとイカンよーだな…” Is she suggesting here (via “shit[e ]okan[ai]”) that the situation is like it is because she didn’t “do something about him” beforehand? The entire bubble is in kana, so it’s almost impossible (except for “gaki” and “ikan” being in katakana) to tell where one word ends and another starts, unless you’re a fair bit better in vocabulary than I… ^_^

  10. Part of Chisame’s reaction is jealousy, but I’d say a lot of it is legitimate concern for the emotional well-being of her classmates and any future harem recruits. To put it lightly.

You’re right about the contractions 「どうにかしておかない」, but what she is saying is more like “Yeah, looks like I will definitely have to do something about that brat.” To break it up properly: 「やはり あの ガキ どうにか しておかない と いかなない ようだな」
